China: April raw cotton cotton imports

Local sources indicate that the provisional customs figure for raw cotton imports in April is 160,800 tonnes, 32,900 tonnes more than the number reported in March, but over 63,000 tonnes less than that recorded in April last year. Cumulative imports during the 2014/15 international cotton season (which commenced on August 1 last year) amount to just over 1,374,000 tonnes, or merely 42 percent of those recorded during the corresponding timeframe a year earlier.

The cumulative total is nonetheless within 226,000 tonnes of Cotton Outlook’s current forecast for the season, 1,600,000 tonnes, which (with three months of the period remaining) clearly errs on the side of caution.

USDA reported this season’s outstanding sales commitment for shipment to China at the end of April as equivalent to nearly 139,000 tonnes. A good volume of Australian is also likely to be shipped to the same market during the May/July period, together with more modest quantities from other origins.
