Equities sustain heavy losses in advance of New York’s reopening

Share markets have today been trading sharply lower on reports of the potentially harmful new Covid variant identified in South Africa. At around 11.30 GMT, equities in Europe were down from two to four percent from yesterday’s close. Asian markets earlier finished with heavy losses. Following yesterday’s closure for Thanksgiving, New York will resume trading at 08.00 Eastern Time (13.00 GMT) for an abbreviated session.
